Top Tips for Entertaining the Kids

Keeping the kids busy can be a challenge – especially through the summer months. Without access to popular attractions, there’s never been a better time to get creative at home!

School’s out, summer’s in, and keeping the kids busy with fun and interesting activities can be a challenge – especially around the house! We’ve collected our favourite creative ideas for keeping your little (or big) ones entertained – at least for a few hours.

Create a scavenger hunt

Plan a scavenger hunt around your house. You can hide items you have in the house, like favourite stuffed animals, and include everyday finds like twigs. Have them search for things both inside and outside the house! Small rewards like stickers provide great encouragement as they work through their hunt – try creating a mixture of easy, medium, and hard tasks to keep their hunt engaging, adventurous, and fun!

Host your own cooking show

Who doesn’t love to watch a good cooking show?! Try recreating one in your home kitchen – featuring the kids as sous chefs. You can get them involved in the recipe – whether it’s putting grass-fed hotdogs on skewers, or sprinkling some seasoning onto a chicken breast, the kids can be the helping hands along the way. Or, you can create your own competition-style cooking showdown. Order online to keep product stocked in the kitchen, and any meal can turn into a show – plus, you’ll have amazing home video footage to look back on for years to come.

Have a backyard beach day

Grab the swimsuits, towels, toys, and snacks – and create a beach day in the backyard. Even if you don’t have sand or a lake, you can still play in the water with a sprinkler or a hose and have all of those tasty beach snacks like chips, cheese, cracker, and sausage pieces. Don’t have water lovers? Try a backyard picnic with all the fixings instead – and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Do a “Backwards Day”

A day outside of the normal routine can be tons of fun and can breed all kinds of incredible memories. Try out a backwards day – start with a tasty dinner like shrimp tacos, then lunch, and end the day with breakfast. Change into pyjamas first thing in the morning and try to do all your daily tasks from end to beginning – like reading a story first thing in the morning. Don’t want to commit to a whole day? Try doing a reverse dinner – have dessert first!
