Meat Us On Mill Street

It’s a well-documented phenomenon that meat and beer make a perfect pair. Just ask anyone who has cracked open a cold one while grilling steaks on an open flame – it’s a combination that can’t be beat. We took a look at Mill Street Brewery’s six unique core beers, and found the best truLOCAL products to make a perfect match.

Organic Lager: When you think Mill Street, you probably think the Organic Lager. It’s the quintessential Canadian lager – not too bitter, not too sweet, but plenty delicious! The first, and most popular, of their core lineup of beers, this lager is delicate and bready, with a lightly floral aroma. The first beer brewed with only organic hops and malt, the Organic Lager was a game-changer in the Canadian beer scene. The light, crisp body, and balanced flavour profile pairs beautifully with lighter meat options like the non-breaded chicken strips. Pasture-raised (also a game-changer!) and incredibly tender, the only ingredient is chicken – so they can be prepared to taste!

100th Meridian: This amber lager is brewed exclusively with organic hops, malt and yeast from west of the 100th Meridian. A true showcase of the best the west side has to offer, this ale pours a light copper, with a medium body. With sweet caramel malt notes backed by aromatic florals and a light citrus aroma, this flavourful and complex amber lager pairs beautifully with our turkey breast. An all-organic match made in Canadian heaven, lighter options like poultry will balance the more nuanced flavours within the beer.

Tankhouse Organic Ale: A perfect balance of hop bitterness and malt sweetness, the copper-coloured Tankhouse ale is brewed with all organic hops, and five organic malts to yield a flavourful, sessionable ale. This full-bodied, drinkable brew hits you with a complex dose of flavours and aromas, from juicy citrus to spice, backed by noticeable hop bitterness. A flavourful pale ale like the Tankhouse Organic Ale pairs best with classic cuts, like the top sirloin steak from West Grey. Pop one on the grill and crack open a cold one for an irresistible summer treat!

West Coast Style IPA: A fruity, floral take on the classic IPA, this beer is a Mill Street icon. Dry with a dose of hop bitterness, incorporating tropical, citrus, and grapefruit notes, this is an intensely flavourful brew. Paired with a light seafood option, like our pickerel, the comparative sweetness of the fish balances the pronounced bitterness of the brew, allowing the more understated flavours of both to shine through.

Cobblestone Nitro Stout: Creamy and dark, roasty and chocolatey, this stout is both simple and classic. Beer doesn’t have to be wildly complex to be immensely enjoyable – and the Cobblestone Stout is proof of just that! With dark roasted malt flavour and hints of walnut, this stormy sip pairs beautifully with rich, flavourful seafood options like our wild-caught Alaskan salmon. Try a simple almond glaze to further marry the flavours and create an otherworldly tasting experience.

Stock Ale: The Stock Ale is a golden ale, meant to be representative of blonde ales from the “good old days”. A pure brew, featuring just malt and hops – no adjuncts or additives to be found – this is a crisp, balanced, traditional sip. Well-balanced malt sweetness and hop bitterness, with vague white bread/cereal notes, the Stock Ale pairs perfectly with a hearty meal like a chilli. Try it with our ground water buffalo for an even more unique flavour experience!

Whether you’re a brewing connoisseur or a beer beginner, a die-hard steak enthusiast or a casual bacon-eater, taste is always subjective. There’s no one perfect way to enjoy beer, or meat – so experiment, have fun, and enjoy responsibly.
